Hungarian bass-baritone Zoltan Nagy was born in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in 1984.          After completing his vocal studies at the Gheorge Dima Music Academy in 2007, he was awarded a study grant for the Master's Programme at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, studying with Prof. Boris Bakow and Prof. Breda Zakotnik. While continuing his studies there, he already joined the ensemble of Vienna State Opera.

Zoltán Nagy attended several master classes in Romania, Italy, Switzerland and Austria (Mariana Nicolesco, Ion Buzea, Ionel Pantea, KS Angelika Kirchschlager, Paola Fornasari and Claudia Visca) and won prestigious competitions, among them the Hariclea Darclee International Voice Competition, the Romanian Song Competition in Kronstadt, Romania, and the 4th European Opera Singing Competition "Debut" in Germany.

Zoltan Nagy made his operatic debut at the Romanian State Opera Cluj-Napoca as Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia followed by Angelotti in Tosca. His career quickly gained momentum with engagements at the Hungarian State Opera Klausenburg as Figaro: Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Basilio:Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Angelotti: Tosca, the Palace of Arts Budapest as Masetto in Don Giovanni, the Staatstheater Saarbrücken as Figaro: Le Nozze di Figaro and Leipzig Opera as Hans Schwarz: Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Schaunard: La Boheme.

At the Vienna State Opera Zoltan Nagy appeared in numerous productions including Zuniga Carmen, Pistola Falstaff, Carlo V Don Carlo, Baron Douphol La Traviata, Gregorio Romeo et Juliette, Masetto Don Giovanni under such conductors as Renato Palumbo, Marco Armiliato, Paolo Carignani, Adam Fischer, Asher Fisch, Peter Schneider and Stefan Soltesz.

 

Projects in the 2011/12 season include: Opera Leipzig (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: Hans Schwarz and La Bohème: Schaunard), Palace of the Arts Budapest (Concert with the Hungarian Philharmonics for Bartók's birthday: soloist and Die Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth: Kaiser Friedrich II), Kammeroper Wien (Charity concert for Japan), Opera Festvial St. Margarethen (Don Giovanni: Masetto), Stadttheater Klagenfurt ( new production of Tosca: Angelotti)                  Opera de Nice (new production of La Boheme: Schaunard) and Salzburger Festspiele

Apart from his operatic engagements, Zoltán Nagy is also a gifted recital and concert singer, working with orchestras like the National Radio Orchestra of Romania, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Palermo, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic.
